A Personal Endorsement of Carolyn
Earlier this summer I had the privilege of attending a small meeting between Carolyn Laine and a group of educators. The first thing that impressed me was how approachable she is: None of the trappings and affectations that so many public persons adopt. The second thing was that she listens. When she began speaking, she concisely outlined a number of problems our school systems are facing, and then offered a variety of solutions for each. In each case, she would explain her position and opinion, and the pros and cons of how effective the solution would be. More enlightening was the frank assessment of the political feasibility of the various propositions, and the positions of some of the major parties in the legislature.
I was impressed not only with the breadth of her knowledge, but as a successful legislator, the command she has of the political process and her belief that she can get something done. Her enthusiasm was contagious and I left the meeting with more confidence in our system than I have had in a long time.
The best thing about the meeting? During the whole time I never heard one "catch phrase" or "sound byte", and she never dodged one question regardless of its topic or relevance. She is not conflicted by special interest funding and remains confident and fearless in her personal relevance and integrity. She belongs in the Senate where she will undoubtedly lead us to a brighter future.
